H.E.M.P.'s goal is to improve society and the economy through the taxation of marijuana and hemp products grown in the United States. The war on drugs in the United States has been a failure. While the courts have wasted time on marijuana prosecutions, drug trafficers have used marijuana to fund the developement and distribution of more dangerous drugs. Herion, crystal meth, crack cocaine - these drugs could be eliminated if marijuana users were helping fund law enforcement, instead of helping fund the dealers. And of course the money is used to fund illegal guns and violence. Compared to coffee, marijuana can be grown much more easily and much more cheaply. A farmer who receive less than $10 for a bushel of corn kernals or soybeans, could receive $10 per ounce for marijuana. If $150 in taxes and distribution costs were added to this the final cost to the consumer would be $160 per ounce which is probably less than the average national price. In order to insure products are grown in America and properly taxed, H.E.M.P. suggests doubling the current sentences for importing marijuana and also for growing or distributing without a license. We feel the average smoker would not want to grow or sell marijuana, if they could buy legal smoke at a reasonable price. These taxes could be used for all types of projects, from liberal drug counseling to conservative border guard increases. Also, there would be ample funding for businesses to develope all types of uses for hemp, and to tool plants to make hemp fabrics, paper or oil. The legakization of marijuana and hemp products needs to benefit all sectors of society, from the most liberal to the most conservative, for it to be a viable solutions to the problems caused by dangerous drugs.
